Mirik: The Lake Town Day Trip

Sumendu Lake, Bokar Monastery and the tea valleys of Mirik — the classic full-day outing from Lamahatta.

Mirik is the softest landscape in the Darjeeling hills — a small town built around Sumendu Lake at about 4,900 ft, ringed by cryptomeria forest and some of India's finest tea estates. Where Darjeeling town is all bustle and Lamahatta is all quiet, Mirik sits pleasantly in between: a place for slow boating, lakeside walks and long tea-garden drives.

Quick facts

  • Distance from Kepchaki Stay: around 2.5 hours by car — plan a full day
  • Altitude: ~4,900 ft
  • Known for: Sumendu Lake, Bokar Monastery, Gopaldhara & Thurbo tea estates, orange orchards
  • Best months: October–May; the lake is liveliest in autumn and spring

Sumendu Lake

The heart of Mirik: a 1.25 km lake with paddle and rowing boats, ponies along the shore, and the 80-ft Indreni footbridge arcing over the water. The 3.5 km path around the lake, shaded by cryptomeria pines, is an easy and lovely walk — on clear days Kanchenjunga appears above the treeline on the northern side.

Bokar Monastery

Above the town, the Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling Monastery is one of the region's important centres for Buddhist meditation study. The prayer hall's murals are intricate, and the terrace looks across the whole Mirik valley — arrive during morning prayers if you can.

Tea gardens and orchards

The drive into Mirik passes through the Gopaldhara and Thurbo estates, whose high-elevation teas are prized worldwide. The slopes en route are lined with orange orchards (best in November–December) and cardamom. Many guests find the drive itself — ridge roads with tea on both sides — the best part of the day.
