Takdah — locally "Tukdah", said to come from the Lepcha word for mist — earns its name almost daily. Clouds drift through this old British cantonment the way traffic moves through a city, curling around century-old bungalows and cedar forest. Established as a cantonment in the early 1900s, Takdah is now one of the most atmospheric offbeat destinations near Darjeeling.

The heritage bungalows
Over a dozen Edwardian-era bungalows survive from the cantonment days, scattered along Takdah's quiet lanes — steep gabled roofs, wooden verandas and fireplaces built for another century. Several have been restored as heritage stays and tea rooms; the rest simply sit in the mist, wonderfully photogenic. The old church and the cantonment post office add to the time-capsule feel.
Takdah Orchid Centre
The small government-run orchid centre cultivates dozens of Himalayan orchid species — worth a stop especially between spring and early summer when the blooms peak. Entry is nominal, and the keepers are usually happy to talk you through the rarer species.
Walks and tea gardens
Takdah rewards walkers: gentle forest paths wind through deodar and dhupi pine towards Tinchuley, and the surrounding slopes hold quiet tea estates like Rungli-Rungliot ("thus far and no further" in Lepcha — reportedly where a lama halted his journey). Ask our driver to combine the cantonment loop with a tea-garden stop.
