Tinchuley — the name means "three chulhas (ovens)", after the three hillocks that shape the village — sits at around 5,800 ft on the ridge between Takdah and Lamahatta. What was once a quiet farming village has become one of the most rewarding offbeat stops near Darjeeling, and for one reason above all: the sunrise.

The sunrise
From the Tinchuley viewpoint on a clear morning, the first light climbs the entire Kanchenjunga massif peak by peak while the Teesta and Rangeet valleys below stay flooded with cloud. Unlike Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, there are no queues and no jostling crowds — often it's just you, a cup of tea from a nearby stall, and the mountains. Beyond the viewpoint
Give Tinchuley half a day. The small Buddhist monastery above the village is wrapped in prayer flags and silence. In season (November–December), the orange orchards are heavy with fruit and the village sells fresh oranges, homemade pickles and squash. Tinchuley is also known for its organic farming initiative — much of the produce here, like at our own kitchen, is grown without chemicals. Short forest walks lead towards Takdah through deodar and dhupi pine.
