How to Reach Lamahatta, Darjeeling

Routes, travel times and typical taxi fares from NJP railway station, Bagdogra airport, Darjeeling town and Kalimpong.

Lamahatta sits on the Darjeeling–Kalimpong road (NH 717A) at around 5,700 ft, between Ghoom and the Teesta valley. It has no railway station or airport of its own — every journey starts from New Jalpaiguri (NJP), Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or Darjeeling town. Here's how each route works.

At a glance

  • From NJP railway station: ~70 km · 2.5–3 hours by car
  • From Bagdogra Airport (IXB): ~70 km · 2.5–3 hours by car
  • From Darjeeling town: ~23 km · about 1 hour
  • From Kalimpong: ~30 km · about 1.5 hours
  • Homestay pickup: Kepchaki Stay arranges pickup from NJP and Bagdogra on request

From NJP railway station

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest major railhead, connected to Kolkata, Delhi and most metros. From the station, a reserved car to Lamahatta takes around 2.5–3 hours. The scenic route climbs via Sevoke, follows the Teesta river to Teesta Bazaar, then winds up through Peshok's tea gardens to Lamahatta. A reserved taxi typically costs in the range of ₹2,500–3,500 depending on season and vehicle — agree on the fare before starting. Shared jeeps run to Darjeeling and Kalimpong, but not directly to Lamahatta, so a reserved car (or homestay pickup) is the practical choice.

From Bagdogra Airport

Bagdogra (IXB) has direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Guwahati. The drive to Lamahatta is nearly identical to the NJP route — around 70 km and 2.5–3 hours — with prepaid and app taxis available at the terminal. Fares are similar to NJP, roughly ₹2,500–3,500 for a reserved car.

From Darjeeling town

Lamahatta is an easy 23 km drive from Darjeeling — about an hour via Ghoom and the 6th Mile junction, from where the Kalimpong road descends towards Lamahatta. This also makes Lamahatta a favourite stop on Darjeeling–Kalimpong sightseeing circuits.
