Lamahatta is about 70 km from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station, and the drive takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic in Siliguri and conditions on the hill road. A reserved taxi is the simplest option; shared jeeps are much cheaper but require a change along the way. We arrange pickup for guests, which is worth considering if you're arriving with luggage or after dark.

Fares vary by season, vehicle type and fuel prices. Peak season and late-night arrivals cost more. Always confirm the fare before the vehicle starts moving.
Reserved taxi
The straightforward choice. Prepaid taxi counters operate at NJP, and drivers wait outside the station. A direct reserved car to Lamahatta typically runs ₹3,500–5,000 for a small vehicle, more for a larger one or for a Sumo/Bolero in peak season.
Practical advice:
- Agree the fare and the destination before loading bags. Say "Lamahatta, on the Darjeeling–Kalimpong road" — some drivers know it as being near Takdah or the eco park.
- Prepaid counters are less hassle than negotiating outside, though sometimes marginally pricier.
- Ask if the price includes any parking or toll charges, so there's no conversation about it at the end.
- Booking through your homestay usually means a driver who knows the exact house, which matters on a village road after dark.
Shared jeep
Much cheaper, and how most locals travel. There's no single direct shared service to Lamahatta, so you change:
- NJP → Darjeeling or Jorebunglow. Shared jeeps leave from near the station and from Siliguri's Tenzing Norgay bus terminus. Roughly ₹250–350 per person, about 3 hours. They leave when full, mostly in the morning.
- Jorebunglow → Lamahatta. A second shared vehicle along the Darjeeling–Kalimpong road, around ₹60–150 per person, 30–45 minutes.
Only attempt this in daylight. Shared services thin out sharply through the afternoon and effectively stop by early evening. If your train gets in late, take a reserved car.
The route
The road climbs from the plains at Siliguri into the Teesta valley, following the river for much of the way before turning up towards the Darjeeling ridge. The last stretch runs along the Darjeeling–Kalimpong road through pine forest to Lamahatta.
Two broad routes get used — via Kurseong and Ghum, or via the Teesta valley and Takdah. Drivers pick based on conditions and traffic. The Teesta valley route is the more scenic of the two.
Worth stopping for: the Teesta viewpoints, Rambi, and — if you have time and the light is good — the road through Peshok tea garden.

Coming back down
Allow 3.5 to 4 hours to NJP for a train, and add buffer. The descent isn't faster than the climb, and Siliguri traffic is unpredictable. For an early morning train, leaving before dawn is normal — we arrange this for guests regularly.
