Bagdogra to Lamahatta: distance, time and fares

Last updated: August 2026

Lamahatta is roughly 70–80 km from Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and the drive takes about 3 to 3.5 hours. A reserved taxi is the practical way to do it — there's no direct shared service, and the last stretch runs on a village road. We arrange airport pickup for guests on request.

Which flight to book

This matters more than people expect.

Land by 2pm. The drive is three-plus hours, and arriving in daylight is better in every way — the views on the way up are much of the pleasure, and finding a village house after dark is harder for a driver who doesn't know it.

Avoid late-evening arrivals if you can. They're doable by reserved taxi, but you'll arrive tired, see nothing of the route, and pay more.

Bagdogra fog, December–February. Morning flights are occasionally delayed or diverted in deep winter. If you're on a tight schedule, build in a buffer day.

Flying out: allow four hours from Lamahatta to the airport, plus check-in. For an early flight, an overnight in Siliguri is worth considering.

The drive

You leave the plains at Siliguri and climb into the Teesta valley, running alongside the river before turning up towards the Darjeeling ridge and finally onto the Darjeeling–Kalimpong road that passes through Lamahatta.

The change is abrupt and enjoyable: heat and traffic for the first 40 minutes, then tea gardens, then forest and river, then cloud. Most people stop at least once for the Teesta views.

Worth building in: a stop at the Teesta viewpoints, or a detour through Peshok tea garden if the light is good and you're not racing daylight.

Helicopter option

A helicopter service between Bagdogra and Darjeeling has operated in some seasons, cutting the journey to a short flight. It runs irregularly, seats are limited, and it's weather-dependent — so treat it as a bonus rather than a plan. If it's operating and you catch it, you'll still need a car from Darjeeling to Lamahatta, about an hour.

Check current status before relying on it.

Bagdogra or NJP — which is better?

Bagdogra if you're flying, obviously — it's marginally further but the drive is broadly the same.
NJP if you're coming by train, and it's the cheaper arrival overall.

Both are about three hours out, and both work fine. See our NJP to Lamahatta guide for train arrivals.
