You can work remotely from the Darjeeling hills for a week, a month or a season. At Kepchaki Stay in Lamahatta you get a private room with a desk and a window facing green mountain ranges, Wi-Fi throughout the house, power backup so an outage doesn't end your day, three home-cooked organic meals so you never think about food, our own Kepchaki Cafe on site, and hot water on cold mornings. Long-stay rates start at ₹1,200 per person per day for stays of seven nights or more.
Why Lamahatta works better than Darjeeling town
Most people planning a workation in the hills default to Darjeeling town, then spend the trip stuck in traffic on Hill Cart Road, paying tourist prices, and hearing car horns through the window.
Lamahatta is about 23 km out — roughly an hour's drive — and it is a village, not a town. Pine forest, terraced fields, a few homes spread along the ridge. The practical difference for someone working:
- It is genuinely quiet. No traffic noise. The loudest thing most afternoons is birdsong.
- Nothing to do at 3pm — which sounds like a downside and is actually the point. There is no distraction economy pulling you out of your workday.
- Costs are lower, and with all meals included you have no daily food decisions or expenses.
- Walking is the default break. Forest trails start at the door, so your screen breaks are actual breaks. There are viewpoints, waterfalls and hiking routes around the village that aren't on Google Maps — the family knows them and will take you.
- A cafe on site. Kepchaki Cafe means a change of desk without a change of location.
What you get for working
| Wi-Fi | Available throughout the homestay. Several guests have worked full days from here, including video calls. |
| Desk & chair | Rooms have a sitting area and table; tell us in advance and we'll set the room up for work. |
| Power backup | Available. A mountain outage doesn't cost you a workday or a call. |
| Mobile network | Jio and Airtel work in the village. Useful as a hotspot backup. |
| Meals | Breakfast, lunch, evening snacks with tea, and dinner. Organic produce, cooked in our kitchen. You don't cook, shop or order. |
| Kepchaki Cafe | Our own cafe on the property — coffee, tea and food through the day, and a second place to sit and work. |
| Hot water | Geyser in every attached bathroom. |
| Laundry | Can be arranged for longer stays. |
Who this suits
It works well for:
- Content creators — the light, the forest, the mountain and the cafe give you more usable backdrops in a week than a city gives you in a month, and there's no one competing for the shot.
- Peace seekers — people who want a few weeks of quiet more than they want sightseeing.
- Writers, developers, designers, researchers and PhD students — anyone whose work is long, solo and screen-based.
- Couples where one or both work remotely.
It works less well for: anyone who needs guaranteed corporate-grade connectivity for eight hours a day with zero tolerance for a slow patch, or who wants a co-working space with other people around. Mountain internet is good and we have power backup — but be honest with yourself about how much margin your job allows.
The best months for a long stay
| Period | Working conditions |
|---|---|
| March–May | Excellent. Clear, mild, flowers out. Also the busiest, so book early. |
| June–September (monsoon) | Green, misty, deeply quiet, cheapest. Kanchenjunga still shows on clear mornings around 6–7am. Best value if you're flexible. |
| September–November | The best months overall. Crisp air, and Kanchenjunga visible through most of the day on most days. |
| December | Cold, dry and clear. Excellent views, very cold mornings. |
| January–February | Cold and very quiet. Excellent for deep solo work if you don't mind layering up. |
For a first workation, October–November is the easy answer. For a long, cheap, undisturbed writing stretch, monsoon is underrated. See our month-by-month guide for the full picture.

Lamahatta is about 70 km from both New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station and Bagdogra airport (IXB) — roughly three hours by road. We arrange pickup on request, which is worth it if you're arriving with a laptop bag and a suitcase. See our how to reach Lamahatta guide for routes and fares.
Practical things to bring for a long stay: a power bank, a laptop stand if you care about your neck, warm layers regardless of season, and any specific medication — the nearest pharmacy is a drive away.
